The van carrying Cregan struck another prisoner transportation vehicle as it travelled to Preston Crown Court, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

A spokesman told Channel 4 the crash was “not a prison break”.

Four prison officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

One prisoner was injured, though he has not been named, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Both runways were closed at Heathrow airport after a British Airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

The Airbus A319, which was carrying 75 passengers on its journey to Oslo, was forced to return to the airport moments after taking off because of a ‘technical fault’, British Airways has said.

Dramatic footage from the scene shows smoke billowing from the plane while it is still in the air and eyewitness have described hearing ‘a blowout’ and seeing one of the engines on fire as it flew overhead.

Speculation has emerged that the plane had run into a ‘bird strike’, although there has been no official confirmation of this.

Both runways at Heathrow Airport have been closed after a British Airways plane had to make an emergency landing

A Heathrow spokesman said all of the passengers have been ‘safely evacuated’ and ‘accounted for’.

The spokesman said the airport itself remained open throughout the incident. The plane has now been towed away for investigations and both runways have reopened.

Officials have ruled out a terror attack and investigators are now looking into the possibility of a bird strike shortly after take-off.

Emergency vehicles surrounded the plane and emergency chutes could be seen being deployed after it landed.

Eye witness Clive Cook, who lives on the Heathrow flight path, described seeing smoke billowing from the plane, with the right engine on fire.

He told Sky News: ‘The actual engine itself was on fire.

‘This plane was coming over and suddenly the tone of the engine changed dramatically, and I could almost say it sounded as if it was like a blowout, or an explosion.

‘I’m absolutely certain that as it came through the clouds, and I looked up… the right engine was on fire, it wasn’t smoking, it was actually on fire.’

Mr Cook said he saw the plane over the Thames at Battersea as he was taking his daughter to nursery.

Another eyewitness, named only as Jamie, was working in his garden near to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, when he saw the plane.

He told Sky News: ‘All of a sudden we heard this almighty noise. It was like a fire jet going over. We could just see the right engine on fire – it was absolutely horrendous to see.

‘You don’t see things like that every day, it’s incredible really

‘Your thoughts are with the people – if we could hear it that badly then what were the people going through on that plane?’

He said he thought the plane was just a few thousand feet above the ground and added: ‘It was below the clouds at this stage. To see an aircraft on fire – it wasn’t good to watch.’

The plane is thought to have circled the Greater London area before it made the emergency landing, according to Sky News.

Another witness, named only as Aiden, said he was driving to Heathrow and had to ‘hit the brakes’ as he was worried debris might fall from the plane.

He told LBC 97.3’s Nick Ferrari: ‘I thought to myself it was just the swirl of the wingtips and then I thought it was just too much for one side and I realised it was smoke.

‘The plane’s coming right over the top of my head and I’ve had to brake because when I saw the right-hand starboard engine, it’s just all blackened … I didn’t know if anything was going to fall off it.

‘I’ve had to hit the brakes to make sure we don’t coincide.’

A British Airways spokesman said a ‘full investigation’ had begun into the incident.

The spokesman said: ‘Customers and crew onboard a British Airways aircraft that returned to Heathrow this morning are safe and well after being evacuated from the aircraft.

‘Flight BA762 departed Heathrow at 8.16am and returned to Heathrow at 8.43am due to an engine technical fault

‘The Airbus A319 aircraft was carrying 75 customers and five crew.

‘The aircraft landed safely and cabin crew evacuated customers using emergency slides. Airline colleagues are now caring for customers in the airport terminal.

‘There is likely to be disruption to other flights today into and out of Heathrow. Customers are advised to check ba.com for information about their flights before departing for the airport.

‘The airline has begun a full investigation into the incident and is working with the Air Accident Investigation Bureau to establish the cause.’

London Fire Brigade said a crew from Heathrow fire station had assisted the airport’s fire service with ‘an aircraft fire’.

‘We believe the fire is now out,’ it added.

The plane was on Heathrow’s northern runway which remained shut until it was towed away.

Bird strikes are a serious problem for aircraft and have been known to bring planes down.

Passengers on resumed flights at Heathrow were being warned to expect delays of 30-60 minutes as well as 30 minutes of aircraft taxiing time.

The incident is being investigated by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Captain Mark Searle, chairman of airline pilots’ association Balpa, said: ‘This was a professional job done by professional people. As pilots we spend our whole career training to manage incidents such as this in order to avoid an incident becoming a disaster.

‘Balpa representatives will be assisting the pilots involved in this incident and providing whatever support they need. And, as always, we will all learn whatever lessons we can.’

Armed patrols in response to 10 shootings in Luton have been "scaled back", Bedfordshire Police have said.
Four extra armed response units were introduced on the Marsh Farm and Lewsey Farm estates after a recent spate of firearm incidents this year.

Four extra armed response units were introduced on the Marsh Farm and Lewsey Farm estates after a recent spate of firearm incidents this year.

A police spokesman said 14 people have been arrested in connection with gun crime.

He added there was still a “high profile police presence” in the area with the situation reviewed daily.

There have been 17 gun-related incidents in the town this year, 10 of which have been shootings.

Ch Supt Mark Turner said: “The armed police patrols that people saw the images of on the TV and in the media have been scaled back.

“We still have a high profile police presence, that is utterly important to make sure reassurance is there, and we review that on a daily basis to make sure we’ve got it right.

“We will continue to go after the criminals who are hurting Luton.”

‘Safe event’

Ch Supt Mike Colbourne said he recognised recent events had also caused concerns for people intending to come to this Sunday’s Luton International Carnival.

He said it was an opportunity to “tip the balance back to what we are proud of as a town”.

“All of our security and safety operation is put in place for one reason only, to make sure that people can come out and enjoy it,” he said.

Mike McMahon, from joint organisers Luton Borough Council, said it was a “safe event”.

“I live in the town and I can absolutely understand [the concern] but this is a family friendly event,” he said.

“We have been running it since 1977 and it has been a low crime event and with all the contingency plans from ourselves, with the security firms and Bedfordshire Police, we have all the [safety] measures in place.”

A man will be in court today facing charges of deliberately mowing down pedestrians in a hit-and-run rampage that left mother-of-three Karina Matthews dead.

Matthew Tvrdon, 32, is accused of deliberately targeting parents and young children with a white Iveco van in the Ely and Leckwith areas of Cardiff on October 19 last year.

He faces one charge of murder, 13 counts of attempted murder, four counts of actual bodily harm and one of dangerous driving.

Karina Menzies, 31, was run down and killed outside Ely Fire Station. A total of 13 others were injured.

A hearing at Cardiff Crown Court was adjourned last month when Tvrdon was deemed too ill to attend.

Today he will appear at the same venue via videolink from Ashworth high security psychiatric hospital in Maghull, Merseyside.

All 19 charges that he faces will be put to him for the first time in a plea and case management hearing.

More than a dozen people were injured during the rampage after the first incident was reported in Crossways Road, Ely, at 3.30pm on Friday.

Two of the injured adults were left in a critical condition and five children also received treatment after the driver of the white van brought bloodshed to the streets of the Welsh capital.

Sky News

The dramatic moment police shot the two Woolwich terror suspects has been caught on video.

New footage shows the two men brandishing weapons and charging at officers in a car as they arrive at the scene.

One of the men runs straight at the car as police shout “drop it”.

Just inches from the door of the vehicle the man is blown off his feet by a shot from an officer in the back of the car. Two shots ring out.

Officers run from the car to cover him as he lies prone on the ground, his legs are moving.

During his charge, his accomplice runs alongside on the pavement armed with what appears to be a gun, which is pointed at officers.

Four shots are fired by SO19 marksmen and the second man is felled.

A further two shots sound out as the men lie on the ground being tended by officers.

The whole sequence is over in seconds.

Screams can be heard above the helicopter whirring overhead and people can be seen running in panic as the shooting starts.

Police officers shout at those around to “get back” as they can be heard calling for an ambulance.

IT repairman Zac-Samanachi Qadir, 35, who filmed one of the pieces of footage, told The Sun: “The police opened fire, they had no choice.

“The guy in the brown coat had the revolver. His thumb was hanging off his hand. It could be his gun had backfired.”

For more than 10 minutes after they allegedly hacked to death 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby, the men waited for police to arrive, inviting people to film them, with their hands covered in blood clutching blades.

The suspects, Michael Adebolajo, 28, originally from Romford in Essex, and Michael Oluwatobi Adebowale, 22, of Greenwich in southeast London, are being treated for non life-threatening injuries under police guard at separate hospitals.

The men, who are of Nigerian background, but born in Britain, were both known to the security services , but were assessed by MI5 as not posing a threat requiring “immediate intervention”, Government sources said.

Detectives are now questioning two people, a man and a woman, both 29, who were arrested last night following a series of armed raids.

Six addresses were searched as part of the investigation, three in south London, one in east London, one in north London and one in Saxilby, Lincolnshire, the former home of Adebolajo.

The front door of a home in east London’s Eastney Street had been shattered.

A neighbour said four people were led away from the flat at 6am, and that two children, aged three and seven, were also taken away.

The Metropolitan Police said: “This is a large, complex and fast-moving investigation which continues to develop.

“Many lines of enquiry are being followed by detectives and the investigation is progressing well.”

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was not pursuing any criminal or misconduct offences in relation to the officers who used their weapons.

IPCC investigators have viewed CCTV of what happened, and said two officers fired guns and one discharged a Taser.

Drummer Rigby, who was from Manchester and married with a two-year-old son, was described by his family as a “loving son, husband, father, brother and uncle”.

“All he wanted to do from when he was a little boy was be in the Army. He wanted to live life and enjoy himself. His family meant everything to him,” his family said.

His colleagues in 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers said he was as an “extremely popular and witty soldier” who had a “larger than life personality” and was a passionate, lifelong Manchester United fan.

Drummer Rigby served in Afghanistan in 2009 and was also posted to Cyprus and Germany.

His battalion is currently training in Cyprus, but he was on attachment to its London headquarters as a recruiter.

US President Barack Obama has added his voice to those condemning the murder.

He said: “I condemn in the strongest terms the appalling attack against a British service member in Woolwich on May 22.

“The United States stands resolute with the United Kingdom, our ally and friend, against violent extremism and terror.

“There can be absolutely no justification for such acts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim, the police and security services responding to this horrific act and the communities they serve, and the British people.”

His comments come after Prime Minister David Cameron said the attack had “sickened” the country.

He said: “This country will be absolutely resolute in its stand against violent extremism and terror. We will never give in to terror or terrorism in any of its forms.”

:: Police have issued an appeal for anyone who has still or moving images of the incident to send them to: woolwich@metincident.co.uk

They asked anyone sending in images to include their name and contact details, which they said would be treated in the strictest confidence. Alternatively, those with footage can contact the police’s anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789321.

Two men have been released on bail following their arrest for making alleged offensive comments on Twitter about the murder of a British soldier in London.

Complaints were made to Avon and Somerset Police about remarks that appeared on the social networking website, which were allegedly of a racist or anti-religious nature.

A 23-year-old and a 22-year-old, both from Bristol, were held under the Public Order Act on suspicion of inciting racial or religious hatred.

The arrests follow the murder of 25-year-old drummer Lee Rigby on a street in Woolwich on Wednesday as members of the public watched in horror.

The father-of-one, from Manchester, had fought in Afghanistan with the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Detective Inspector Ed Yaxley, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “On Wednesday evening, we were contacted by people concerned about comments made on social media accounts.

“We began inquiries into the comments and at around 3.20am two men, aged 23 and 22, were detained at two addresses in Bristol.

“The men were arrested under the Public Order Act on suspicion of inciting racial or religious hatred. Our inquiries into these comments continue.

“These comments were directed against a section of our community. Comments such as these are completely unacceptable and only cause more harm to our community in Bristol. People should stop and think about what they say on social media before making statements as the consequences could be serious.”

Police confirmed the two men were later released on bail pending further inquiries.

A mother and daughter who died after falling ill on a boat on Lake Windermere were killed by generator fumes, an inquiry has found.
Kelly Webster, 36, and Lauren Thornton, 10, of Leyland, Lancashire, were found suffering from breathing difficulties on the boat on 1 April.

Kelly Webster, 36, and Lauren Thornton, 10, of Leyland, Lancashire, were found suffering from breathing difficulties on the boat on 1 April.

They were taken to hospital, where they later died.

A Marine Accident Investigation Branch report found fumes from a detached generator filled the boat.

Ms Webster’s partner Matthew Eteson, 39, also from Leyland, was taken to hospital suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning but was later released.

The investigation found a portable petrol-driven generator had been installed to supply power to the boat.

The generator had been fitted with an improvised exhaust and silencer system which had become detached, it said.

This caused the generator’s exhaust fumes to fill the engine bay and spread into the cabin at the rear of the vessel, where the mother and daughter were sleeping.

The boat’s carbon monoxide sensor system did not alarm because it was not connected to a power supply, the investigation found.

North Lanarkshire Council is set to be the first local authority in Scotland to install life-saving defibrillators in all of its high schools.

The machines deliver an electric shock to the heart in cases of cardiac arrest – when the heart stops pumping blood.

Survival chances of those affected by cardiac arrest decrease by 10% for every minute without defibrillation.

All 24 secondary schools in North Lanarkshire will be fitted with the machines before the end on March 2014.

The £70,000 cost of installing the automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) units is being met by the council, NHS Scotland and partner agency Amey.

Councillor Jim Logue, convener of learning and leisure services, said: “With many of our secondary schools open in the evening and at weekends for community and sports activities, having a readily accessible AED unit nearby could play a crucial role in helping to save lives at these locations.”
