The boys, ages 5 and 9, died after being struck shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, according to the state highway patrol.

The boys father, 28-year-old Juan Ruiz of El Paso, Texas, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, The Associated Press reported. Another 9-year-old boy also suffered minor injuries.

The four were camping at the Hahn’s Bay campground at Lake Metigoshe.

The 30-year-old driver crashed into a tree afterward, according to authorities.
